Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the option to question specific calls from the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
